DAY 3 – WALK TO AN ANCIENT MILL

Today we had more wonderful weather. This was mostly a downhill or gentle rise and fall hike that gave us a day to recover from our first taste of higher alpine hiking the day before. We walked out of town on one of the main roads for a short distance, turned onto a narrow rural road past several farmsteads.

We then entered a forest area and dropped slowly down to a lower elevation,
eventually reaching a paved road.

We followed this road to a farmhouse where the owners grew a large variety of herbs. We had a very informative lecture when we visited their organic herb garden. The Pflegerhof Herbgarden website is: www.pflegerhof.com

Later we had a picnic lunch near the Ancient Mill. This is a demonstration mill preserved as an example of how grain was ground over a hundred years ago. We had an interesting lecture and animated demonstration at the site.

From the Mill Site, we walked along a paved road to meet our bus in Siusi. We were reminded that there were still a few hills to climb as we clambered up a short walking path into the village and our transportation back to the hotel. The length of the day walk was about 6 miles total.
