DAY 4 A VISIT TO BOLZANO / BOZEN |
|
This was our first rainy day, but it was light and intermittent. We took the local bus down to Bolzano for a full day visit. It is a scenic drive down the sidewall of a river carved gorge. It was a festival day lots of visitors and food booths, along with a band concert in the central park. |

Bolzano is a neat and walkable city of about 100,000 people. I ran into someone who was on a Rick Steves Tour, but they were not staying in Castelrotto, but the next town up the road, Seis / Siusi. Guess there was no room at the inn. Our tour of the small city included the
South Tyrol Museum of Archeology Bozen / Bolzano that now houses the famous 5,300 year-old
Iceman that was recovered high on an alpine glacier several years ago. This is
a great example of how you can take a single exhibit and build a large unrelated museum
around it. The history of Bolzano and environs takes up most of the space in the museum
anchored physically and financially by the Iceman. |
| We also visited a beautiful church with magnificant frescoes. Following lunch we were free to explore on our own and return by local bus to our hotel. |
