We boarded the train for a 30 minute ride to the popular German resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, site of the 1936 Winter Olympics. From the railway station, We walked to the entrance of the Partnachklamm Gorge passing the Olympic Arena enroute.

This was a dramatic walk in a deep gorge carved from solid rock with waterfalls descends from the high limestone walls.

Gorge Trail (41436 bytes)

A hiking path has been carved and tunneled into the walls of the Parnach Gorge. Although much of the path is sheltered by a rock overhang, there are places where spray, dripping water, or puddles requires rain gear to stay dry. The water flowing through the gorge is a rushing torrent.

    Gorge Exit (14026 bytes)

We exited our walk through the gorge and crossed over to the other side of the steam. From there we climbed an extensive series of switch backs to the top of the adjacent ridge. There we stopped for lunch. A sunny respite with open views after the confinement of the gorge.

After lunch we followed a well layed out trail system back to the railroad station for a ride back to Seefeld.  A thoroughly entertaining day.
