Hikes, Walks and Event Schedule

A variety of hikes and outings are offered on Mount Diablo State Park and the surrounding parks and preserves owned and operated by the East Bay Regional Park District, and other local agencies. Vehicle entrance fees may be charged at some park entrances.

Events are sponsored by the groups identified and are solely responsible for the conduct of the event.  MDIA only provides this listing as supplied by hike sponsors and can not be responsible for errors in the listing or accuracy of the information provided. Contact leaders to confirm information and appropriateness of the event.

Please be aware that these hikes and walks do take place on often difficult mountain trails. Individuals with special needs should call at least two weeks in advance. Individuals participating must take responsibility for their own level of fitness.

For more information on State Park programs call Mt. Diablo State Park at 925-837-0904. For all other programs, call the event leader.

Please remember that dogs are not allowed on State Park trails.

Saturday, October 15 - Tarantula Trek - 4 pm - 7 pm    SORRY BUT THIS EVENT IS FULL!!
A 19th century scientific expedition to Mount Diablo described tarantulas as “attaining the size of a half grown mouse, possessing fangs the size of a rattlesnake’s, and delivering a bite generally considered fatal”.  Fact or fiction?  Join Ken Lavin for a spider talk and nature walk in search of Mount Diablo’s giant spiders. This is an easy hike of about 2-1/2 miles round trip. Reservations Required: RSVP to ken_lavin@hotmail.com  $6 park entrance fee. We will meet at the Mitchell Canyon Visitor Cente,  96 Mitchell Canyon Road Clayton, CA 94517

Sunday -  October 23 - Bird Walk
8:00 am - 11:00 am

Join Denise for an autumn morning walk at Mitchell Canyon.  We will be looking for winter and resident birds in various habitats.  We will also listen for subtle bird sounds that will give away the birds' identities even if we can't see them.  The pace will be relaxed with some uphill on Mitchell Canyon Road and Red Road.  Contact

Join Joyce Chin and docents Ruth Ann and Jim for a talk and 2-1/2 mile round-trip nature walk to find the world's largest spiders.  Reservations Required:  RSVP to jchin.hikes@hotmail.com $6.00 park entrance fee.  Meet at the Mitchell Canyon Visitor Center.  96 Mitchell Canyon Rd. Clayton, CA 94517.  Rain cancels.
